Write a blog post

A post is a dated page that stays out of your menu. Kitset keeps a list of every one of them at /news on your site, newest first, so there is never a list to update by hand.

About 3 minutes

Posts are how a website keeps growing after it is finished. Google pays attention to sites that keep adding pages, and a post about a job you did in a particular suburb is exactly the page somebody searching for that job in that suburb finds. The blog is part of the Pro plan.

Each post is a page of its own with its own address. It does not go in your menu, because ten posts would push out the links people actually came for. Instead, every time you publish, Kitset rebuilds your news page: every post you have written, newest first, with its date, its title and its first line. It wears your colours, fonts, menu and footer like the rest of your site.

Your news page is your web address followed by /news, for example mybusiness.co.nz/news. Nobody finds a page that nothing points at, so add it to your menu once and every post after that is one tap away. You can also add the "What's new" section to your home page. It shows your newest 12 posts, and once you have more than that it ends with a link to the full list.

There are no words to edit on the news page itself. Kitset writes it from your posts each time you publish, which is what keeps it from ever listing a post you have deleted or missing one you have just written. Change a post, publish, and the list follows. If you already had a page of your own called News, that page stays yours at /news and Kitset does not replace it; put the "What's new" section on it and it will list every post rather than the newest 12.

Step by step

  1. In the editor, open the page menu at the top and press Add a page.

  2. Choose A news post and give it a title.

Title it the way somebody would search for it. "Bathroom renovation in Papamoa" will be found; "Latest job" will not.

  3. Write the first line, then the post.

The first line is what shows under the title on your news page, so make it the one that makes somebody want to read on.

  4. Publish. The post and your news page both update.

  5. The first time only: open Menu, press Add a link and choose News.

News only shows up in that list once you have written at least one post.
